2013 AJCL Latin Convetion
26-7 April
Co-hosted by Samford University and your very own Altamont!
There were many special events
at this year’s convention, which saw 602 attending students, viz. a video
tribute for Dr Peter Howard, long time professor of Latin at Troy and two-term
president of the ACL. The documentary, directed by Altamont senior
Turner Collins, charts the progress of Latin teaching in Alabama and showcases
the many great things Dr Howard has done for the AJCL, the ACL, and for himself
and his family. We should have numerous copies of the film on file.
It is a touching and inspiring documentary. Much of the decoration and artistic production hails directly from the mind of Tori Kraftsow ’13. Tori designed and painted standard banners for every school in attendance, 12 panels depicting the labours of Hercules, and the convention t-shirt. She also oversaw the decoration of the Samford dining hall themed after Nero’s Octagon for the festival.
Sophomore Olivia Jones oversaw a Roman salon and dressed numerous students in hairstyles mimicking authentic styles from the numismatic record. Her Agrippina Minor design is especially impressive. Other favourites included a 5th century Athenian, and two Cleopatra options.
On a less serious note: under Altamont direction the annual miniOlympics included a new two-man potato sack race called the Dioscuri Dash. It’s a spectacle, I assure you.
I’m proud of all our students but special note should be made of Andy Vahle who was elected to serve the AJCL next year as eponymous consul. Andy has captained our certamen team to state championships for each of the past 5 years and consistently taken first place in the state in Greek and Roman history over that time.
