LATIN CLUB SCRAPBOOK
2014 has brought Latin Club the opportunity to give back. We have been lucky enough to participate in the usual things: AJCL state convention, National Latin Exam, Classical Literacy Exam, and a great trip to Italy but our service projects really make this year special. 5th and 6th graders have been able to lead a change drive to help fund public defenders offered by the International Justice Mission, 7th-8th graders donated to cancer research and ran the Rumpshaker Fun Run at Sloss Furnaces on the Ides of March, 9th and 10th graders lead a clothing drive for Greater Birmingham Ministries, and our elder statesmen translated a portion of the Materia Medica, an 18th century Latin text, for UAB's Reynolds Library.
We based our service project program on Plato's four primary virtues of wisdom, fortitude, temperance, and justice. We hope our actions have helped our republic thrive and think Plato himself would approve!
Our club booths were fun and Frisbee themed as always: for Homecoming we hosted the disc toss, and at May Day the highly coveted Extremus Discus Cup was won by Team Ilia.
A few students require special notice.
Special congratulations are due to Andy Vahle for winning the Virginia Praytor Scholarship from the AJCL. This is the highest honor an Alabama high school Latin student can receive.
William Tang and Jonathan Hurowitz join seniors Ginny Gresham and Andy Vahle as earners of the Maureen O'Donnell prize from the NLE for four consecutive gold medals on the National Latin Exam. This is quite an achievement! Jonathan and Andy have both qualified for additional scholarships for their erudition. Andy is currently serving his one year term as consul for the Alabama Junior Classical League and will pass off his responsibilities to Nathan Sorscher next year.
Thank you, Olivia Jones, for coordinating all service projects and working with all our students to make a difference. Thank you, Ginny, for overseeing our clothes drive! Olivia has just been hired as a teacher at The Youth Classics Institute this summer.
We're proud of all our Latin students. They are all winners... No really, they are. Check out the convention results in the tab above! They even took first, second, and third at the fun run. Keep it up!
