Greek 15-16
All the educated Romans from the second century BC onward knew Greek. The Roman Empire itself moves east and becomes Greek. (Justinian was the last native Latin speaker to rule the empire, so that's about a thousand years of emperors speaking Greek as their first language.) All great Latinists know some Greek - it makes your Latin WAY better. All great scholars know Greek. Gosh, this must be a pretty important year! If you're like me, Latin will serve as your gateway into the Hellenic. Welcome to a much deeper, richer world where antiquity still somehow manages to whisper to us on a breeze.
